As a traumatic experience begins the brain immediately swings into action. most of us will find ourselves in the state of what’s known as hypervigilant. What this means is that our body and brains suddenly become very alert towards everything around us. If somebody has undergone a traumatic experience and is triggered into experiencing it again, this state of hypervigilance can be reactivated by the brain. This can cause difficulties for someone experiencing this throughout their life. It essentially places you in a state of near panic at the slightest provocation.
Other effects from trauma are usually centred around someone’s memory. Within our brain is stored the capability to process both short term and long-term memories. The brain effectively sorts through what it wants to keep and what it wants to discard. A traumatic experience can be buried deep within our subconscious only to resurface at trigger point times. alternatively it may well be that the brain decides to only remember partial parts of the trauma so as to protect us from further occurrences but leave enough to act as a defence.
