Upon sending a steering rack for rebuilding, the expert in the repair shop goes through a series of fixed stages. This is a step by step description of the Audi Steering Racks rebuild process.
Stripping and Inspection
After the removal of all components, which are then checked for damage and wear, the entire rack is then stripped. All parts are then checked for any signs of the following types of damage: scoring of the rack bar, wear of the pinion gear and any possible cracks in the housing.
Seal and Bearing Replacement
Worn seals, O-rings, and bearings are replaced with suitable parts for the Audi Steering Rack. More on Audi Steering Racks can be found at https://westernpowersteering.co.uk/vehicles/audi/.
Rack-and-Pinion Adjustment
After the Steering Rack has been reassembled, the rack travel is checked end-to-end for smooth and consistent movement. The pinion bearing preload is then measured and set to the correct manufacturer’s figure to eliminate any play without over-tightening.
Pressure Testing
After the rebuilt parts have been fitted, the complete unit is then pressure tested, holding the working pressure and checking for any fluid weeps.
Final Quality Checks
The steering torque is measured for the whole lock travel, i.e. it is measured for the full lock-to-lock travel. These checks ensure that the same feeling is obtained when steering as was the case before the rack was taken apart for repairs. The quality checks mirror the checks carried out during the MOT test for the steering system as regards to play and also as regards to the feeling obtained when steering.
A full rebuild of the Steering Rack carried out in this sequence of processes gives a rebuilt rack, as new, to a customer without the cost of a new Steering Rack Replacement.
